Senior Consultant Spine & Neurosurgeon: Dr Colum Nolan

Dr Colum Nolan is a highly experienced Senior Consultant Spine and Neurosurgeon with over 20 years of medical and surgical practice, specialising in minimally invasive spine surgery (keyhole surgery), motion preservation surgery (disc replacement surgery), as well as the utilisation of spinal navigation and robotic technologies.

He currently serves as the Medical Director of Oxford Spine and Neurosurgery Centre, with clinics at three locations across Singapore, including Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital, Mount Elizabeth Hospital (Orchard), and Mount Alvernia Hospital.

Dr Colum Nolan’s Education and Training

Dr Colum Nolan graduated from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 2001 and completed his early surgical training in Dublin. He undertook specialist neurosurgical training in Ireland and Australia, including an intra-residency fellowship at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. He later completed a complex spine surgery fellowship at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, UK with fellowship at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, with additional rotations at the Orthopaedic Spine Unit in Norfolk and Norwich Hospital.

His advanced training equipped him to manage a comprehensive range of degenerative spine conditions, including disc herniation (slipped disc), spinal stenosis, spinal cord compression, spondylolisthesis, scoliosis, as well as spinal tumours and complex  spine fractures — all with a strong focus on minimally invasive and motion preservation techniques.

Before moving into private practice, Dr Nolan served at Singapore’s National Neuroscience Institute (NNI) from 2014, where he held several key leadership roles:

  • Director, Spine and Spinal Disorders Programme, NNI
  • Senior Consultant Neurosurgeon, based at Tan Tock Seng Hospital and Sengkang General Hospital
  • Head of Neurosurgery Service, Sengkang General Hospital

 

  • His clinical interests include:
  • Degenerative and complex spinal disorders
  • Cervical spine surgery (particular expertise with motion preservation and disc replacement surgery)
  • Spinal trauma and spinal tumours (particular expertise with intradural tumours such as schwannomas and meningiomas)
  • Minimally invasive and endoscopic spine surgery
  • Image-guided spine surgery with navigation and robotic technologies


He is a Visiting Consultant at NNI and the National University Hospital (NUH).

Dr Nolan is a strong advocate for education and academic contribution in neurosurgery. He has:

  • Served as Adjunct Assistant Professor at Duke-NUS Medical School
  • Published in international peer-reviewed journals and presented at global conferences
  • Reviewed for academic journals and international meetings
  • Received the Singapore Health Quality Service GOLD Award in 2022
