Dr Colum Nolan is a Senior Consultant Neurosurgeon and the Medical Director of Oxford Spine & Neurosurgery Centre. He subspecialises in Spine Surgery with over 16 years of experience, and has expertise in minimally invasive spine surgery and the use of spinal navigation technology.
He completed his Fellowship in Complex Spine Surgery at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge UK, which also included a rotation at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital, under the Orthopaedic Spine Unit.

A surgical procedure that stabilises and fuses vertebrae in the spine using small incisions and specialised tools. It is designed to treat spinal instability, deformities, or chronic pain caused by conditions like degenerative disc disease, spondylolisthesis, or scoliosis.
Epidural injections deliver anti-inflammatory medication (usually corticosteroids) into the epidural space around the spinal cord and nerves to relieve inflammation and pain cause by conditions such as herniated discs, spinal stenosis, or sciatica.
A nerve block involves injecting a combination of a local anesthetic (for immediate pain relief) and sometimes a corticosteroid (to reduce inflammation) near specific nerves responsible for transmitting pain from the facet joints.
RF ablation uses heat generated by radiofrequency waves to disrupt the medial branch nerves transmitting pain signals from the facet joints. It provides long-term pain relief by "deactivating" the medial branch nerves and typically lasts 6–12 months or longer, depending on the individual.
Minimally invasive procedures designed to treat disc-related back or neck pain by targeting the structures of the intervertebral disc. They are often used when conservative treatments fail, and are ideal for patients with mild to moderate disc issues.
